Anatomy of a raid to rescue dogs allegedly bred to fight

LAURENS COUNTY Georgia, Georgia (CNN): The plan was this: The sheriff would drive to the property to execute the search warrant for particular objects generally associated with dogfighting, and for the dogs themselves.

Expressing concerns about the conditions at this private residence where dogs were suspected of being bred for dogfighting, Laurens County Sheriff Bill Harrell said, "If anything is going wrong, we want to get it stopped."

Private investigators with Norred and Associates Inc. will work alongside Harrell and his deputies, leading tactical teams. The teams were made up of veteran investigators donating their time, effort and expertise, along with volunteers of the Dublin-Laurens County Humane Society, who would collect and care for the the full story at CNN

Animal control seizes pit bulls, makes two arrests

A raid at a residence in Lindale today resulted in the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of several dogs living in unsanitary conditions. According to officers, the dogs had been used in a fighting operation.

Norred & Associates, Rome-Floyd Animal Control, and the Floyd County Police Department cooperated in the arrest. Norred & Associates, an Atlanta based corporate security and investigation firm, had been monitoring the operation for some time and decided they had enough information to move on the operation.

"We got a tip some time ago about this operation and we took the tip to the Floyd County Animal Control and the Floyd County police," Charles Simmons of Norred and Associates said. "They did an investigation that led to warrant and today's action." The raid resulted in the rescue of 12 adult male pit bulls, three females and about six puppies at an Eden Circle home.

Animals Rescued in Floyd County Raid

ROME, GA -- For the past six months, Chuck Simmons has waged a war on dog fighting. As a result, he's received several death threats. It hasn't stopped him.

The private investigator for Atlanta's Norred and Associates recently traveled to Floyd County. A tip to a statewide dog fighting hot line took him to a home, deep in the woods in the eastern part of the county. The trip paid off.

Private security firm helps bust alleged dogfighter in Georgia

There's been considerable attention paid to the role played by private security firms in the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As it turns out, one such firm is also helping with the stateside war against dogfighting.

Earlier this month, the Appalachian Circuit District Attorney's office raided Mountain Swamp Kennels in rural Blue Ridge, GA, near the border with North Carolina. Owner Albert Glenn White was arrested and charged with more than 20 counts of felony dogfighting. Authorities say they found three fighting pits on the property and dogfighting paraphernalia and seized 22 dogs, some of whom reportedly have scars consistent with fighting.

The tip line was set up in the wake of the dogfighting case involving former Atlanta Falcon's football player Michael Vick by private security firm Norred & Associates, which is headquartered in Atlanta with offices in Miami; Memphis, Tenn.; Hilton Head, S.C.; and Birmingham, Ala.
